Year 6 Survival Skills Adventure on Hampstead Heath
Could you survive in the wild with just your teammates, a handful of resources, and your determination? That was the challenge Year 6 Jacaranda and Iroko faced during their action-packed Survival Skills Trip to Hampstead Heath!
From the moment they "arrived on the island," the children were immersed in a thrilling scenario: a tropical storm was on the way, and they had limited time to prepare. Their mission? Work together to build shelters, make fires, and learn how to stay safe in the great outdoors using natural materials, limited resources and their wits.
Teams explored the environment, identifying key survival priorities: shelter, warmth, and teamwork. They learned how to assess the landscape and resources around them – just like real-life explorers.
Shelter Building
With the storm approaching, pupils set to work constructing shelters from branches, tarpaulin, and rope. Problem-solving and collaboration were key as teams tested their structures for strength, waterproofing, and space.
Fire Lighting
With guidance and safety in place, children used flint and steel to create sparks – and eventually fire! For many, it was the highlight of the day, watching their teamwork literally ignite.
To complete the mission, teams reflected on what helped them succeed and how they overcame challenges. From leadership and resilience to creativity and cooperation, the day tested not just survival skills, but life skills.
It was a brilliant outdoor adventure full of mud, laughter, learning – and unforgettable memories. A huge well done to our Year 6 survivalists: the island may have been wild, but you were ready for the challenge!
A huge thank you to all the adults who supported us on the trip and made sure our children were safe throughout the day. We are also incredibly grateful to the fantastic educators from the City of London for leading such an engaging and inspiring session.
