Year 5 Architecture Trip to Coal Drops Yard

Our two Year 5 classes enjoyed an inspiring educational visit to Coal Drops Yard in London, with a focus on exploring and comparing modern and historical architecture. Located next to King’s Cross Station, this unique site offers a rich environment for observation, discussion, and creative exploration.

Coal Drops Yard was originally built in the 1850s as a place to receive and distribute coal brought into London by train from the north of England. The two long Victorian buildings were used to store coal before it was moved by horse-drawn carts across the city. After many years of disuse, the area was redesigned and reopened in 2018 as a lively public space, where the old industrial structures have been carefully restored and combined with modern buildings.

During the trip, pupils observed different architectural styles, comparing the shapes, materials and features of older and newer buildings. They discussed how buildings can change over time and how new ideas can be added to old spaces. Each child had the chance to sketch a building that caught their attention, using their drawing skills to capture interesting details. The trip was a wonderful opportunity to learn outside the classroom and see how architecture helps shape the world around us.
